HTTPS protocol and SSL encryption
The abbreviation HTTPS stands for ‘HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure’, i.e. it is a secure protocol for the transmission of web pages. The encryption protocol SSL – Secure Sockets Layer – is used for data security during transmission via HTTPS. SSL was developed by Netscape Communications Company for the safe transfer of data over open networks such as the Internet. SSL uses the RSA system for encryption via a public/private key, which also entails the use of a digital certificate.
In practice, secure connections are recognized by two factors: the address of all secure web pages begins with the chain ‘https://’ (as opposed to ‘http://’ for non-secure pages). Take a look at your browser’s address bar to confirm this – you should see ‘https://www.guide-prague.cz/static/cardpay_ssl’. (Our pages are fully functional in the secure mode and therefore if you do not see ‘https://’ in the address bar you can change the address from ‘http://’ to ‘https://’, which will take you to the secure version of our site and all further communication with us will be secure.)
The other sign of a secure connection is the small padlock displayed in the lower right-hand side of your browser’s status bar. The exact appearance and location may differ depending on what browser you use – in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox it looks like this:
Website certificate validation is particularly important when you enter your card number in the form. Therefore, before filling in the Česká spořitelna form, please make sure that the connection is secure and that the certificate is valid and confirms that you are communicating with Česká spořitelna a.s.
